Overview

The Problem

In today’s fast paced and convenience-driven world, some boba tea lovers face frustration when purchasing their favorite drink orders due to long lines, crowded stores, and inefficient ordering systems. When rush hour hits and a sudden surge of customers come rushing in, wait times can increase, which can make customers nervous. Additionally the increase pressure to decrease line sizes may cause for confusion when checking for identification when selling alcoholic beverages.

The Challenge

How might we develop Bubbl Bar’s mobile application to save customers time and convenience when ordering their favorite boba drinks - just the way they like them - while also handling ID checks smoothly when needed?

Interviews

To get started, I conducted interviews to understand the target users and their needs. A primary user group identified was that of individuals who were did not want to wait in line, due to either being busy. Bubbl Bar’s target customers are meant to be young adults and older who enjoy both boba and drinking alcohol. When conducting interviews, these were the primary pain points found:

Frustrations surrounding wasted time, especially during busy hours or short breaks.


“I don’t mind paying what I do for boba, but I hate waiting 15 minutes in line during my break.”

Troubles surrounding social discomfort, due to a dislike of large crowds or social anxiety.


“I feel so awkward with people breathing down my neck just for a drink. It was even worse because of Covid.”

Lack of customization options when ordering a drink or meal.


“I onced asked a cashier if I could get half sugar and almond milk, and they said ‘no changes allowed’ It didn’t say that on the menu so I wasted my time standind there.”

Based on information obtained from user research, I came up with two user personas whose demographics and goals represent the vast majority of the startup’s target users.

Competitive Analysis

After conducting the interviews, I decided to do a competitive analysis by looking at some existing boba ordering platforms or sites, and navigated through them. I also read the customer reviews to help me identify some drawbacks of the existing resources and what could be improved on.

Brainstorming

After conducting user interviews and analyzing my research, I focused on ideas that solved the primary pain points I came across and met user desires for convenience, speed, and control. Something I also had to remember was that Bubbl Bar is intended to be a boba tea shop that also serves alcoholic beverages, so a seamless ID verification that did not hinder the user flow needed to also be considered.
